Archbishop Carroll AAA Pennsylvania State Champions

Filed under: Kevin Lynch — Kevin Lynch @ 7:56 pm

Archbishop Carroll cruised to a State Title on Saturday night at Penn State. They were the top AAA team all year and showed why in the state tournament. Carroll played in the shadow of their more publicized neighbor Cardinal O”Hara all season. I watched Carroll out at the Phoenix Tournament of Champions, they played in the Mike Desper Division. This was the second best division of this top rated tournament. Carroll went undefeated and they were on a collision course with Mater Dei of Santa Ana California. Carroll could not stay for the whole tournament due to travel constraints,or else we may have had two Philadelphia Catholic teams as TOC champions. I was also at the only game Carroll lost all year, to Arch-rival O”Hara. The difference in that game was a third quarter where Carroll went ice cold and O’Hara pulled away. Carroll rolled through the rest of their schedule undefeated. The reason..incredible guard play and unselfishness. They started 4 guards led by the tough as nails Shields sisters Kerri + Erin. Kerri is smooth, smart and a real leader. Erin is a pit-bull, will run through anybody or anything for a win.Emily Fazzini,Marykate McCann and Jen Carney knew their rolls, and played them to perfection.Hollie Mershon was always coming up with key plays, steals. drives, rebounds and her ever improving three ball shooting. She was deadly at times this season. The unsung hero of this team was Kaitlin Cole, the only player with forward size 6″0., she was forced to battle the center of the opposing team. Although she was shorter than almost every player she played against. Kaitlin used her strength, and basketball knowledge to often frustrate taller foes. The job the coaches did were commendable. Coach Chuck Creighton always had a knack for calming his team when they needed it, and pushing them when they slacked off. Creighton’s assistant coaches Rene Shields and Jerry Olinger are selfless knowledgeable volunteers who just love the game. All of this equals one heck of a team. One hell of a season.
