Nike Tournament of Champions Phoenix AZ. 2011

The first day of the TOC provided some minor upsets, as is usual in this top notch event in the desert. But the biggest upset in years occurred tonight as Cicero-North NY defeated Bolingbrook IL 43-40 in a sloppy but exciting at the end tilt. The game matched two players who will be teammates at UCONN next year. Cicero’s Breanna Stewart and Bolingbrook’s Morgan Tuck. Neither player played their best game, but Stewarts interior defensive presence, and some timely shooting from 5’9 senior Brittany Paul, was enough to overcome a sluggish performance by Bolingbrook. I will be the first to admit that I did not think Cicero was good enough to be in the top bracket. They are a good high school team with a great player, but in my opinion, did not have enough athletes to compete with the likes of Bolingbrook. I WAS WRONG. I was asked my opinion before the tournament, by the folks who run the TOC, and in mind I thought they would get crushed by some of the country’s top teams. I have been proven to be a terrible prognosticator. Looking forward to day number 2!
